This One Thing

I listened to a podcast yesterday with Tim Ferris and Gary Keller.  Gary wrote a book called ‘The ONE Thing’.  Their conversation was long and covered a lot of ground – the book is going directly to my must read list.  Last night I ruminated over my takeaway which was about the importance on focusing on the one thing you can do today to make your life easier in the future.  Examples include…. ‘if the first thing I do when I get home at night is find my wife, kiss her, get the plan for the night’ then we are set up for the rest of the evening.’ ‘if I fire myself as ceo {which he did} and hire someone better suited for the job my company will be more successful’.

There was also a conversation about choosing one mentor for each part of your life and following just that person.  That way you don’t get lost in all of the noise of so many people telling you what to do.

I thought about this passage of Matthew where Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and they are trying to trip him up by peppering him with questions.  Sweet Jesus, I just imagine him rolling his eyes and being like duh – of course there is a commandment that is most important.  Right here it is proven Biblically about the importance of ‘the ONE thing’.  If you will do just this one thing  you’ll be set up for blessed and easier life.  If you’ll follow this one mentor you’ll be set up for  a blessed and easier life.
 
RULES
#1 Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence
#2 Love others as well as you love yourself

And then there are the other rules you set up for yourself – this goes along with the concept of Principles by Ray Dalio – if you set up hard and fast rules for your life when you’re not under pressure then it’s easier to follow the rules when you are.

For example, I will not ride a motorcycle.  You can’t change my mind. Been there, done that, got the tshirt.  I’m done with it.

I don’t eat dessert or candy EVER except on New Years and then just until the first full week of the year when we do prayer and fasting and reset.  I don’t miss it, it’s not self denial, I just don’t do it.

There are sooo many other things I shouldn’t do.  And hard and fast rules about things you should do no matter what. 
# Put your phone down when talking to another human
# Get your quiet time and work done early so that the rest of the day can be spontaneous
# Make your bed  every day
# 60 minutes every day of strength or cardio or both

This could go on for pages and pages and the purpose isn’t to live by rules but to live by a few set principles that are non-negotiable so that you are living to the glory of God and taking care of your family, biz and health – these are the four pillars of a long happy life.  The rest can be fly by the seat of your pants and you can live comfortably that way because you know the four pillars are solid.
