Judges 2 begins as a retrospective to a time before Joshua had passed away. The chapter explains that the people behaved properly serving & worshiping God during the time Joshua was alive - and still held it together while the elders that outlived Joshua were alive. But once a couple of generations had passed - and the memories of what Israel had gone through were no longer fresh in this younger generation - these kids just lost their minds. God was someone their parents related to but they didn’t.  But more than losing site of who God is - they began to intermingle with those wicked Canaanites that had been left behind. They began to believe in their Gods.

Bal was the God of Weather. In an agricultural community weather = crops = money.  Their beliefs led them to thinking that worshipping Bal was a golden ticket. There was alsoAshtoreth. She was the God of fertility.  Fertility = more livestock = money.  And to provide her sacrifices you literally went to a brothel and paid to have sex . So we have a bunch of young people with no moral guidepost (no king), and they are running around worshipping money and sex??? Say it isn’t so.

To try and guide them God raised up spiritual Judges.  I’m sure they were total sticks in the mud for the folks running to brothels to leave their sacrifices.

“When GOD was setting up judges for them, he would be right there with the judge: He would save them from their enemies’ oppression as long as the judge was alive, for GOD was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning because of those who afflicted and beat them. But when the judge died, the people went right back to their old ways—but even worse than their parents!—running after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Stubborn as mules, they didn’t drop a single evil practice.”
‭‭Judges‬ ‭2:18-19‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Yet still - God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning.  They are running around being giant ass holes - worshipping other Gods - loving money and sex and anything that FEELS good - never seeking joy from God - and while God is seething in anger, he loves them so much. He shows compassion when they go before the judges. This is the love of a parent, a good parent that loves you anyway. That’s who our God is!  He loves you no matter what the but.........

But I lied......

But I coveted.....

But I gossiped....

But I had an affair.....

But I had an abortion.....

“It doesn’t matter. I might not love what you did, but I love you more than anything. I always will.” - God
